What is the Community Police Academy?

The Vallejo Police Department’s Community Police Academy gives community members a structured, behind the scenes look at how their police department operates. Over an eight to ten week program, classes are held on Saturday afternoons from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.The academy is designed to provide an overview of the department’s functions, methods, and procedures. It is not a police officer training course. Instead, it offers participants a broad understanding of modern law enforcement and how we serve the City of Vallejo. Police officers and professional staff present on a wide range of topics, including Vallejo PD policies and procedures, crime suppression, internal affairs, police use of force, patrol operations, traffic enforcement and collision investigation, communication operations, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), hostage negotiations, the volunteer program, cadets, explorers, K9 deployments, and more. The academy combines classroom instruction, practical exercises, and demonstrations. Each session introduces a new aspect of policing and includes professional presentations. Graduates of the Community Police Academy will also have the opportunity to apply for and join the Vallejo Police Department Volunteer Program, allowing them to continue their involvement and service to the community.

Who May Attend?

The Community Police Academy is open to community members who live in, or own a business in, the City of Vallejo. Participants must be at least 18 years of age and able to attend the scheduled sessions and must successfully pass a background screening. The background screening is part of the standard administrative process for participation in the academy.

Cost

A fee of 50 dollars is due upon applicant approval. If an applicant is not selected for the session, the fee will be returned.

What Is Provided?

Each academy member receives all training materials, a binder, and a Community Police Academy T-shirt. A graduation ceremony is held on the final day to recognize participants who complete the program.

Our Goal

The goal of the Community Police Academy is to help participants gain a clear understanding of the role and responsibilities of law enforcement in Vallejo. The academy also provides an opportunity to meet the men and women who serve in the Vallejo Police Department and to build stronger relationships between the department and the community. Through this program, we aim to strengthen our partnership with the people we serve and support a safer, more connected City of Vallejo.
